Appellate Courts to Be Ready by End of the Year
On March 28,2022, the Permanent Secretary/Secretary to the Judiciary Dr Pius Bigirimana and the Chief Registrar HW Sarah Langa Siu were led on a guided tour of the construction site of the Appellate Courts. The purpose was to apprise themselves of the progress of the construction of appellate courts.
The seven-story twin appellate courts building will host customized courthouses for both the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal with modern courtrooms, chambers for the Justices and Registrars, boardrooms, a gym and a restaurant, two basement floor parking for226 vehicles among other amenities. The construction project executed by Seyan iBrothers is fully funded by the Government of Uganda.
Dr Christopher Ebal,the Commissioner (Engineering and Technical Services) reported that "at the moment plastering is almost done. On the Supreme Court side, tiling is up to 90percent, the door frames are being fixed, working on the court halls, the docks, fixation of sanitary ware and electrical wiring is ongoing. We expect by November 2022 for the work to be done."
Additionally,plastering for the Supreme court tower is currently done as well as the internal plastering for the Court of Appeal wing pending its external plastering which is so far 95 percent complete.
PS/SJ, Dr Pius Bigirimana noted that the construction is on schedule having extended the target time frame for completion from June to November due to COVID interruptions. "I can comfortably say that we are on course and progress has been made for the construction of both the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal,"he said.
Adding that the tiling, electrical conduits and window frames are being fixed, and the roofing is almost done. "We believe that we shall be in time to enter the Appellate Courts by the end of this year." PS/SJ further disclosed.
According to Dr Bigirimana upon its completion, the Judiciary will save at least Shs6 billion it pays annually in rent for the appellate courts.
